Oven cleaning without harsh chemicals
Baked-on grease does not need a caustic fog. Heat, a food-safe degreaser and time will lift it if you work in the right order.
A yellow chemical oven cleaner works, and it also fills the kitchen with fumes that sit in soft furnishings. We use a heated degreaser that breaks the carbon down so it wipes off, then rinse until the racks no longer feel slippery.
The order that actually works
- Take the racks and trays out and soak them separately
- Heat the cavity just enough to soften the grease, then switch it off
- Work the door glass, the floor, then the walls
- Finish with the seal and the gap under the door
What not to scrub
Steel wool marks enamel. A plastic scraper is enough once the carbon has softened. If the oven has a catalytic liner, leave that panel alone — it is meant to burn residue off during a hot cycle, and scouring it ruins the coating.
Tell us if the oven is pyrolytic before the job. Those cavities are cleaned differently, and the racks often cannot go through the self-clean cycle.
