Bathroom mould: what a deep clean can and cannot do
Surface mould on silicone and grout usually lifts. Mould inside the wall does not, and painting over it makes the next inspection worse.
Brisbane bathrooms grow mould because they stay warm and damp. A deep clean removes what is sitting on the surface. It does not repair a leak behind the tiles.
What we can lift
- Black spots on silicone, shower frames and the ceiling exhaust
- Soap film on glass and the tide mark in the shower base
- Pink residue around taps, which is usually bacteria in the biofilm, not mould
What needs a tradesperson
If the plaster is soft, the paint is bubbling, or the same patch returns a week after a clean, moisture is coming from behind the surface. Replacing silicone is worthwhile when the bead has split. Painting the ceiling without fixing the fan or the leak just seals the stain in.
After the clean, run the exhaust for twenty minutes and squeegee the screen. Those two habits do more than any weekly spray.
